The Royal Marines Prayer
O eternal Lord God, who through many generations has united and inspired the members of our Corps, grant your blessing, we beseech you, on Royal Marines serving all around the Globe. Bestow your crown of righteousness upon all our efforts and endeavours, and may our laurels be those of gallantry and honour, loyalty and courage. We ask these things in the name of him whose courage never failed, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.
These lines stood out for me today, and they have to an extent been my lectio divina:
“may our laurels be those of gallantry and honour, loyalty and courage”
“We ask these things in the name of him whose courage never failed, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ”
I was struck by how young many of these lads were. These are RM Commandos: highly trained, dangerous even, asked to do a difficult task in difficult places. We ask a lot of them and we should (and we do in this parish) hold them and their colleagues in our prayers.
Notice that the prayer asks that the Corps models itself on the ultimate courage: that of Christ. Today, I found that concept humbling.
