Liturgy for Admission of Children to Holy Communion

Ordinary 15 with Admission to Holy Communion

In the name of the +Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The Lord be with you
and also with you

Let us say together the words of the entrance antiphon:

Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:8)

My dear friends in Christ, today we come together in special joy as we see a new group of young people admitted into the body of Christ and to join us as regular sharers in these most holy, sacred and wonderful mysteries. A warm welcome therefore to you all and especially if you have come to see Erin, Charlotte, Mya, Jasmin, Kitty and Hannah reach the end of this stage of their journey in faith, a journey begun at baptism and which we pray will progress in faith and love to the sacrament of confirmation and beyond.

We pray for them today and as we do so, we pray for the life, work and witness of this parish, that we might foster ever more people in their journey of faith: never too young, never too old.

Invite the young people to join me at the front

Admission to Holy Communion

The candidates and the congregation stand. The priest says to all

In baptism we are made members of Christ’s family. As members of that family, we gather together to share in this meal which he gave us as a continuing sign of his living presence among us. We do this in obedience to Jesus’ command which he gave at this last supper with his friends on the night before he died.

To the candidates the priest says

Today is an important stage in your Christian journey, which began at your baptism. We welcome you as you come to receive Holy Communion for this first time.

The priest addresses the children by name:

Erin, Charlotte, Mya, Jasmin, Kitty and Hannah: Do you wish to be admitted to Holy Communion and to share regularly in this sacred meal?

The children reply together:

Yes.

The priest addresses the parents:

Will you help these children to grow in faith and come to confirmation?

The parents reply together:

We will.

The priest addresses the congregation

Will you welcome these children as communicant members of Christ’s family and support them with your friendship and your prayers?

The congregation replies:

We will.

The priest prays for the children:

Lord Jesus Christ, we pray for these children
who today receive bread and wine for the first time in your name.
Give them such a sense of the mystery
of your body and blood,
that day by day
they may grow to be more like you.
Amen.

and says:

In the name of John, Bishop of Plymouth, I welcome you to the sacrament of Holy Communion. May God bless you as you continue with us on your journey of faith.

Penitential Rite

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

Dear God,
you made me,
you love me,
I’m sorry when I’m angry
or I hurt other people.
Thank you for taking care of me.
Amen.

May the God of love and power
forgive you and free you from your sins,
heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,
and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: Receive our prayer.

For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, In the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect

Let us pray

Father,
your Son, Lord Jesus,
gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his suffering and death.
May we, who share in the one bread and drink of the one cup,
be filled with thankfulness.
We ask this through the same Jesus Christ our Lord
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Proverbs 3:1-6

A reading from the book of Proverbs

My child, do not forget my teaching but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.

This is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you; that on the same night that he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said “This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me. In the same way he took the cup after supper, and said “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.” Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

JOHN 6:51-57

Hear the Holy Gospel according to John.
Glory to You, Lord.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

This is the Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, O Christ

Homily

Baptismal Creed

Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess our common faith in Jesus Christ.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,
source of all being and life,
the one for whom we exist?
I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,
who took our human nature,
died for us and rose again?
I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,
who gives life to the people of God
and makes Christ known in the world?
I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.
This is our faith.
We believe and trust in one God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Peace

We are the body of Christ, regardless of our age
by the one Spirit
we were baptized into one body
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up the common life.

The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you

Let us offer one another a sign of peace

Offertory

Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this our sacrifice may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his Church.

Prayer over the gifts

Heavenly Father, we thank you for these gifts,
Bread and Wine, fruit of the earth
We pray you will change them
as you change us
by the power of your Holy Spirit
We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen

Preface

The Lord be with you
and also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give thanks and praise

Lord of all life,
you created the universe,
where all living things reflect your glory.
You give us this great and beautiful earth,
to discover and to cherish.

You give us happy times
and things to celebrate.
In these we taste your kingdom,
a feast for all your children.

You made us all,
each wonderfully different,
to join with the angels
and sing your praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer 2 for Children

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.
He took the bread, and thanked you.
He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.
He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.
This is my blood,
the new promise of God’s unfailing love.
Do this to remember me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again

Father, as we offer this bread and wine,
and remember his death and resurrection,
send your +Holy Spirit,
that we who share these gifts
may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us
that we may love one another,
work for the healing of the earth,
and share the good news of Jesus,
as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,
with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share the one bread

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace

Come not because you are strong,
but because you are weak.
Come not because any goodness of your own
but because you need mercy and help.
Come because you love the Lord a little
and would like to love him more.
Come because he loves you
and gave his life for you.

This is the lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Blesséd are those who are called to his supper
Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Prayer after Communion

Lord, you give us your body and blood in the Eucharist as a sign that even now we share your life. Draw us closer to you and help us to recognise you in all we meet. We ask this in the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen
