December 17, 2010 parish teaching youth Children's Nativity Sermon Outline We have been getting excited for some time now Eager anticipation and wondrous hope Looking forward to the day when it would come… THE ARGOS CHRISTMAS CATALOGUE! And yet, despite all the looking forward to the presents, and all the food you plan to eat, and all the presents, and wondering which X-Factor Clone is going to make the Christmas Number One, and all the presents… and maybe some presents to look forward to… We should pause for a moment and remember the reason for the season Gifts, especially those which you have chosen for friends or relations say something special: They say “I thought of you” They say “You are special” They say “You matter to me” This is what God has done for us This is the best gift which he has given This gift doesn’t come with a price tag This gift doesn’t come expensively wrapped But it comes from the heart. It says “I thought of you” It says “You are special” It says “You matter to me” “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son” says the Gospel of John God’s Only Son steps out of heaven and into our world, to be a gift to the world, to show how much God wants to be a part of our world… Some of the toys and gifts Father Christmas might bring you might break, the batteries might run out, the glittery, tinselly bits might fade and get discarded after only a few weeks of play, for they are of this world. The gift that God gives us lasts forever Jesus Christ might have been born 2000 years ago, walked this earth and shared God’s Good News for only a short time But that gift lasts forever, as Christ remains still with us: here in our hearts, here in the Church, here in his Holy Spirit which courses through all those who believe in the promises of Christ. The batteries will never run out on the Holy Spirit… This gift is for all time. So, my dear friends, I pray that when Saint Nikolaus of Myra – in Scandanavia – Santa Klaus, Father Christmas comes he will bring you your heart’s desire (as long as you’ve been good, for as we all know: he’s making a list…), and as you gather with your family and friends around the Christmas Table… I pray that you will remember the reason for the season, the greatest gift to all mankind Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour Born. Among us. This Christmas time. And so to remind us, let’s watch a retelling of that story (for we can never hear such a wonderful story too many times) from a Church in New Zealand… By spr
